50 tons of frugality
Italy’s leader in die casting technology puts its faith in energy-saving, high-tech products — and in so doing sets new standards.
Using innovation boldly to overcome the crisis. This is the strategy the Agrati Company has adopted as its recipe for success. A leader in die casting machinery for aluminum, white metal and magnesium, the firm has been a driving force in technology for three decades now. Right now it is focusing on energy-saving, environment-friendly designs. The pilot project is the newly developed “HC 50 Energy Saving”.This is a 50-ton, hot-chamber unit with a massive press: 52 tons of locking power, 6.3 tons of injection force and 4.4 tons of extraction energy. And in spite of all this primeval brawn, the machine uses just the half the energy and water needed by conventional systems. “The unit is not only more economical, it’s more productive, as well,” Agrati CEO Vittorio Rovaris is happy to report.
And Rexroth also had a share in this success. “This was the first time our variable-speed pump drive was used in the die casting sector,” explains Angelo Masiero of Rexroth’s Italian offices. What’s new here is installing the technology in machines with cycle times below ten seconds and in a field other than plastics processing. “In the past people thought savings were simply not possible in this sector. But the ‘HC 50 Energy Saving’ proves that just exactly the opposite is true.”
A variable-speed synchronous motor and a hydrostatic unit bring about a significant increase in speed, at reduced energy consumption, when compared with conventional machinery. Since speed is matched to the needs of the press, less heat is generated during operation. As a consequence, the machine works longer before the cooling system, filled with a mixture of water and ethylene glycol, kicks in.
Less energy, water and pollution, and shorter production cycles — that’s how the company sets standards, and not just in Italy. At Agrati the phrase “Made in Italy” means not only innovation but a sense of hometown loyalty, too. Production is exclusively in the town of Zingonia, not far from the city of Bergamo.
